What is our policy for scanning a pregnant patient?

As with any radiology study that uses ionizing radiation, we try to avoid scanning the pregnant patient. The fetus is especially vulnerable in the first trimester. That said, we will scan the pregnant patient if the clinical situation warrants it. Two applications that come to mind include trauma and to rule out pulmonary embolism.
In cases like suspected appendicitis ultrasound should be used first and CT only done when ultrasound does not provide the necessary information.
