premedicate these patients are allergic to IV contrast

Part 1: What patients are allergic to IV contrast?
Part 2: Can we premedicate these patients and if yes what is our premedication protocol?
Part 1: Some categories would include:
  • Patient with prior reaction to IV contrast agent
  • Patient with know allergies to multiple foods, drugs, environmental agents
  • Patient with severe asthma or other similar conditions
Part 2: Our standard premedication protocol is 40 mg of Prednisone P.O. at 24/12 and 1 hour prior to the study. This has been very effective in our experience.
Other published protocols include 50 mg Prednisone at 13, 7 and 1 hour prestudy. Some sites will also give 50 mg benadryl one hour prior to the study
